EXPLANATION OF OUR PRESENTATION, WINDOWS 8


HISTORY

  • Development started before Windows 7 had shipped in 2009
  • Would be adding support for ARM microprocessors in addition to the x86 microprocessors from Intel, AMD and VIA Technologies 
  • Blog launched on August 15, 2011 featuring details surrounding Windows 8’s features and its development process
SAFETY AND SECURITY 
  • Touch screen (PIN and pictures passwords)   
  • Antivirus capabilities to windows defender (bringing it in parity with Microsoft’s Security Essentials Software) 
  • Parental controls – offered through Family safety software 
  • System recovery through new “Refresh” and “Reset” functions
ONLINE SERVICES AND FUNCTIONALITY
  • User can log in to windows with Microsoft account, known as Windows Live ID
  • Ships with a client application for Microsoft’s Sky drive cloud storage services 
  • Bundled multimedia applications are provided under Xbox brand 
  • Games can integrate into an Xbox Live hub application which allow users to view their profile and gamer score 
  • Internet Explorer 10 is include as both desktop programmer and touch-optimized application 
  • Incorporates improved support for mobile broadband, the operating system can detect the insertion of SIM card and automatically configure connection settings 
  • Adds an integrated airplane mode setting to globally disable wireless connectivity
WEB BROWSERS
  • Classified as being ‘New Experience Enabled’
  • Can be coded using Win 32 code instead of Windows Runtime
  • Can still take advantages of features typically reserved for Windows store apps
  • Developers of Chrome and Firefox committed to developing version of their browsers to run in application environment
SECURE BOOT
  • Uses a public-key infrastructure to verify the integrity of operating system and prevent unauthorized programs
  • Could prevent the use of alternate operating system
  • Microsoft’s philosophy is to provide customers with the best experience first and allow them to make decisions themselves
LOGO
  • Officially unveiled a new Windows 8 on February 19, 2012
  • Designed by Pentagram partner Paula Scher
  • The entire logo is rendered in a single solid color

SOFTWARE COMPATIBLITY
  • 32-bit sub-edition runs on CPU, compatible with x86 architecture third generation and can run 32-bit and 16-bit programs
  • 64-bit sub-edition runs on CPU, compatible with x86 8th generation
  • 32-bit programs an operating systems are restricted to support 4 GB of memory
  • 64-bit systems can support 2048 GB of memory
  • Windows RT, the only edition of Windows 8 for system with ARM processors only support applications included with the system supplied through windows update to ensure that system only run application that optimized for architecture
MARKET PERFORMANCES
  • 4 million users upgraded to Windows 8 over the weekend after its release
  • Sold 40 million license Windows 8 in the first month surpassing the pace Windows 7 on November 27, 2012
  • Windows 8 gain 0.63% in December 2012
